PHOTO: Meet the American Who Is Fond of Writing and Speaking Yoruba

Nigerian indigenous languages suffering regress as a result of the nation’s attitude to its native languages. Surprisingly, those who are real custodian of English language are getting really interested in Nigerian languages and cultural heritage.

Professor Andrew Apter, a Director of African Studies in University of California, Los Angeles, is very proficient in Yoruba language. He speaks and writes the language as if he was born and bred in a Yoruba remote village. A couple of years back, he wrote to a friend:
Ore mi owon, omo ile naa ni! Inu mi dun nigba ti mo ri iranse eamil re! Yes, Emi ni, Ogundele, Omo Ayede, Igi aje to mi Igi Ogun gbelele!…

Prof. Apter works on ritual, memory, and indigenous knowledge as well as colonial culture, commodity fetishism and state spectacle. His historical ethnography of Yoruba hermeneutics informs his research on “syncretism” and creolization in West Africa and the Americas.Prof. Andrew Apter came to Nigeria in the 1980s and within the few months he stayed in Nigeria, he chose the rural areas of Yoruba land which in his estimation still have the African culture and traditions intact. As an anthropologist, he investigated such challenging questions as how humans evolved and came to adapt to diverse environments, what led to the rise of urban life, what causes disease and death, how people imbue their lives with meaning, and how language reflects and shapes social life.
As a person who actually wanted to accomplish his mission, he did not stay in the cities like Lagos or Ibadan, he chose an ancient town in Ayede-Ekiti, the then Ondo State, now Ekiti State of Nigeria. He interacted with the people, mostly indigenes of the town and embraced their traditional religions like the famous late Aduni Olorisa who spent her lifetime in Osogbo in Osun State.
He loves Yemoja and Sango festivals to the extent that he wrote a book on them entitled: Black Critics and Kings: The Hermeneutics of Power in Yoruba Society (University of Chicago Press, 1992). He went the extra mile to study the history of the town including the number of Obas that had been crowned, a history that is hardly known to many indigenes of the town.
He was so in love with Yoruba language that he studied it well. When he communicates to his Yoruba friends, he does it clearly in Yoruba with perfect lexis and structure whereas, so many of his Yoruba friends have almost become foreigners in their own country due to their inability to speak or write very well in their native language.
He adopted Yoruba name – Ogundele and he is widely known and called that name in Ayede-Ekiti till date.We have heard of many white men who came to Africa and fell in love with our indigenous languages and religions. Remember the Aduni Olorisa of blessed memory.
Aduni found our mode of dressing attractive and interesting so much that she lived in Osogbo, learned Yoruba language and equally believed in Osun goddess. We will not forget the American who only visited University of Ibadan for the first time to learn the language and preferred the name – Titilayo falling in love with our culture and traditions.
It is true that we had our kingdoms and empires such as Oyo, Benin, Songai and our system of administration. If the white men endeavour to re-write history and tell our children that their ancestors were living like apes before they  were colonised, who will will be ready to dispute and challenge that notion with good knowledge of our history, culture and  heritage? Is it our children and kids who we have not taught our languages or traditions at our various homes?
It would be ridiculous for an American or Briton to return to Africa in order to teach our children and grandchildren their native languages, customs and traditions. It will never happen, God willing but that is only when we shift the paradigm.

CHECK OUT THE JOINING #POINT OF TWO OCEAN

The picture shown in the story is a genuine one, and the message that comes with it is also a fact. The picture shows two different ocean water bodies meeting in the middle of Alaskan Gulf, where a foam is formed at the merging junction.

This happens when glaciers of fresh water start melting and flow to join the ocean water which is more salty. Because of the difference in the salinity and densities of these two meeting ocean water bodies, a surface tension is developed between them that acts like a thin wall and does not allow them to mix. But given enough time, they will eventually mix together.

This picture of two oceans meeting, but not mixing was caught by a photographer on Alaskan Cruise and shared it on Flickrwhich went viral, spreading on many other social networking platforms.

END TIME SIGNS!!!! 8-Year-Old Boy Marries 61-Year-Old Woman [(MUST READ)]

The bride was 61 years old and the groom was an eight-year-old boy! Both families were present at the wedding of Sanele Masilela (8) and Helen Shabangu (61) and the bride's husband and her five children were also at the wedding in Zimbabwe.

The boy's aunt, Patience Masilela (46), explained why the wedding took place.

She said: "The boy was named after his late grandfather who never had a white wedding, so the ancestors told the boy to get married and he chose Helen to be his bride. The family took his desire to get married very seriously. They paid for the bride in March last year and spent a lot on the wedding because they believed it was what the ancestors wanted."

The bride said: "I'm married and have five kids of my own, but I know that this is what the ancestors wanted – and now they are happy. It is a ritual. We are just playing now, but it is a sign that he will get married one day."

The young groom said: "I told my mother that I wanted to get married because I really did want to. I chose her because I love her and I'm happy that I married her – but I will go to school and study hard. When I'm older I will marry a lady my own age."

The bride's long-time husband, Alfred Shabangu (65), said that he never had a problem with her marrying the boy because he too knew that it was what the ancestors wanted. My kids and I are happy. We don't have any problems with it," he said.

However, some community members said they were shocked.

One woman said: "How can a family go this far for the ancestors? It shows that people do take messages from the ancestors seriously."

This was a not a legal marriage – it was only done for ritual purposes. The happy couple seal their marriage with a kiss.

I THINK ASUU STRIKE WILL SOON BE CALLED OFF - SEE PICS EVIDENCE

From all indications, the protracted strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) may be called off anything from now by the leadership of the union.

“We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled. So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time."

These were the words of Prof. Julius Okojie, the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission, NUC, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a media parley with journalists.

He said everything is being done within the law to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school and continue with their studies.

Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved. “There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time.

“So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on."

Date360.net gathered that Vice President Namadi Sambo is making headway in the talks with ASUU.

ASUU strike will end soon – NUC chief

The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, on Wednesday said he is confident that the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off.
Okojie, who spoke in Abuja at a media parley with journalists, said the commission was doing everything within its powers to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school.
“We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled.
“So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time.’’
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that he also reacted to the call by ASUU for NUC to be scrapped, saying “the call is not in good faith as the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties.”
Also speaking on the recurrent disagreements between the commission and some professional bodies over accreditation and running of certain courses by some universities, Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved between both parties.
“There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time.
“So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on.
The executive secretary, who said the commission had closed many faculties not fit to run courses in certain universities, admitted that; “it is not easy to be a regulator.”
According to him, the commission was “silently regulating the system’’ having to also pay professional fees and encourage professors to do accreditation.

Why FG wants ASUU strike to continue!!

Nigerian universities have been buffeted with agonising months of strikes for over a decade and until now, the story is pretty much the same. Government is still unwilling to give the education sector a shot in the arm.
Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, have been on strike since June 30 and has dialogued with FG over 11 times, albeit, inconclusively. This underscores the lukewarm posture of government towards the striking lecturers and from ASUU’s body language and utterances, they have made it abundantly clear to anyone who cares to listen that they are ready to continue the strike even if it takes years, insisting that their decision was adequately taken in a bid to revitalise Nigerian universities.
The bone of contention is lucid in itself. An agreement was reached in 2009 that all federal universities would require a total sum of N1.5 trillion spread over three years (2009-2011) to address the rot and decay in the universities. But, in the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, signed between the union and the government in 2012, FG decided to extend the gesture to include both federal and state universities. After the 2012 review, it was agreed that instead of N1.5 trillion, FG would infuse a total of N1.3 trillion into the universities over four years. Almost four years down the line, FG has refused to fulfill its end of the bargain. Rather than respond to the issues raised by the union that would ensure quick resolution to the imbroglio, government boycotted ASUU to summon a meeting with Pro-Chancellors and Vice-Chancellors of universities, offering them N130billion with a matching order to lecturers to resume work immediately. But the union is insisting that by throwing money at universities in that manner, government has repudiated the 2009 agreement it entered freely with the union and the 2012 MoU. ASUU is not making any fresh demand but has maintained that the 2009 agreement must be honoured.
It is ridiculous that government officials were quoted as saying ASUU’s N1.3 trillion demand is capable of shutting down the country. No. Their insatiable and rapacious greed will. The private jets in the presidential fleet can fly, centenary celebrations is a priority to government, there’s enough money to pay humongous salaries and allowances to federal legislators and other political office holders, enough to forfeit to oil subsidy thieves, enough to pay militants bogus amnesty cheques and phantom contracts while they continue to bunker our crude oil like never before, there’s enough money to beg Boko Haram to accept amnesty but there is no money for law abiding Nigerian students who want to eke out a living using university education as a stepping stone. It is this kind of attitude from the government that provokes the use of brute force by some regional groups to attract government’s attention to their problems.
Government cannot claim it has no money to fulfill this agreement. A country with 109 senators earning about N19.6 billion a year, while N51.8 billion is spent on members of House of Representatives for the same period, totaling N71.4 billion. This sum, N71.4 billion, represents 17.8 per cent of the N400bn yearly intervention fund recommended by the Committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Universities. Surely, our lecturers and universities where they were trained deserve more.
When we talk of heath care, government official and the ruling elite go abroad for medical attention; we talk bad roads, they fly private jets; we talk power, they run their homes on 24-7 alternative electricity source; now we’re talking Education, their wards are in some of the best universities abroad. There is no way the myriad of problems bedeviling the country can be tackled if the political elite don’t feel the pangs.

That Mr President has taken out time from his ‘busy’ schedule to constantly parley with the warring factions of his party, PDP, but has never sat down with ASUU members to chart a course for Nigeria’s leaders of tomorrow clearly shows his priorities. Party affairs and chasing perceived enemies of his 2015 ambition around with apparatus of state are far more important things than bending over backwards to pander to the demands of the striking lecturers.
But then, government must take into cognisance the fact that, the longer the students remain at home, chances are that they will be lured into social vices. The aftermath can be disastrous for the state.
There are misplaced calls in the some quarters for ASUU to be ‘reasonable’, accept FG’s offer and return to classrooms. Others lambast them for being self-centered and unpatriotic. It is unfortunate that Nigerians are always looking for quick fix solutions to monumental problems. Less endowed countries like Ghana, Botswana and Angola are making giant strides on all fronts because the citizenry have at one point or the other insisted that the needful be done. Here, anything thrown at us is accepted with glee.
We must get our priorities right as a country. Government must curb its own excesses. Education must be given the attention it deserves. Education of the citizenry should not be subjected to any form of Negotiation. Negotiating the education of our leaders of tomorrow is more or less negotiating the future of the country.
Government deliberately wants the strike to linger, first, to blackmail the opposition. There have been several unsavoury comments from the government’s divide of the negotiation table that ASUU has been infiltrated by moles from the opposition, alleging that the strike has lingered to gain political capital. That is how low this government can stoop. We have seen it before. It is an irresponsible and shameless government, one that lacks integrity and honesty that will blame the opposition for all its woes. It is unbecoming for the government of the day to continue to heap its failure on the doorstep of the opposition and ASUU strike is just another avenue to paint the opposition black before the public.
Second, is to send a strong signal to other unions who might be contemplating similar action to have a rethink. Perhaps, government thinks by acceding to ASUU’s demands, other Labour unions might toe the same path at the slightest excuse.
Third, the ultimate aim of government is to paint a bad image of the association to Nigerians, at least, for as long as the strike persists. The Governor Suswan-led NEEDS Report Implementation Committee mediating on behalf of the government has unfortunately taken a position that is false, dishonest, and calculated to misinform the public and cause disaffection towards the union. Rather than seek cheap popularity, Governor Suswan and the rest of the FG team should tow the part of honour by asking President Goodluck Jonathan to honour the 2009 agreement. There’s no basis for turning the heat on ASUU and the campaign of calumny.
It calls for worry, that same government that has always maintained that ‘our graduates are unemployable’ and our universities churn out ‘half-baked graduates’ find it difficult to commit the much needed funds to revamp the universities.

HMN!!! MEET TOP 5 RICHEST PASTOR...WHAT DO YOU THINK???

These days, millions of souls, desperate for financial breakthroughs, miracles and healing, all rush to the church for redemption.

God is good, especially if you’re a Nigerian pastor with some business savvy.
And while the bible expressly states that salvation is free, at times it comes with a cost: offerings, tithes, gifts to spiritual leaders, and a directive to buy literature and other products created by men of God.
Pastors are no longer solely interested in getting people to Heaven; they’ve devised intelligent ways to make good money while reaching out to souls.
Take Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, for example. He is the founder and lead pastor of the Christ Embassy, a thriving congregation with branches in Nigeria, South Africa, London, Canada and the United States.
His publishing company, Loveworld Publications, publishes ‘Rhapsody of Realities,’ a monthly devotional he co-authors with his wife.
It sells over 2 million copies every month at $1 apiece. He also owns television stations, newspapers, magazines, a hotel, a fast-food chain, and more.
Many other Nigerian pastors are similarly building multi-million dollar empires from their churches.
Today, pastors fly around in private jets, drive fancy cars like Daimlers, Porsches and BMWs, don Rolexes and Patek Phillipes, and own breathtaking mansions all over the world.
Affiliation: Living Faith World Outreach Ministry, aka Winners Chapel
Estimated net worth: $190 million
David Oyedepo is Nigeria’s wealthiest preacher. Ever since he founded the Living Faith World Outreach Ministry in 1981, it has grown to become one of Africa’s largest congregations.
The Faith Tabernacle, where he hosts three services every Sunday, is Africa’s largest worship center, with a seating capacity of 50,000.
Oyedepo owns four private jets and homes in London and the United States.
He also owns Dominion Publishing House, a thriving publishing company that publishes all his books (which are often centered on prosperity).
He founded and owns Covenant University, one of Nigeria’s leading tertiary institutions, and Faith Academy, an elite high school.

Pastor Chris Oyakhilome

Church: Believers’ Loveworld Ministries, a.k.a Christ Embassy
Estimated net worth: $100 million – $120 million
Last year, the charismatic preacher was at the center of a $35 million money laundering case in which he was accused of siphoning funds from his church to foreign banks.
Pastor Chris pleaded no wrongdoing and the case was eventually dismissed.
His church, Christ Embassy, boasts more than 40,000 members, several of whom are successful business executives and politicians.
Oyakhilome’s diversified interests include newspapers, magazines, a local television station, a record label, satellite TV, hotels and extensive real estate.
His Loveworld TV Network is the first Christian network to broadcast from Africa to the rest of the world on a 24 hour basis.

Prophet Temitope Joshua

Estimated net worth: $60 million – $80 million
Nigeria’s most controversial clergyman is also one of its richest and most philanthropic.
T.B Joshua heads the Synagogue Church of all Nations (SCOAN), a congregation he founded in 1987, which accommodates over 15,000 worshippers on Sundays.
The Pastor has remained controversial for several years for his inexplicable powers to heal all sorts of difficult to cure diseases, including HIV/AIDS, cancer and paralysis.
For miracle-craving worshippers, it’s the perfect seduction. The church currently has branches in Ghana, the United Kingdom, South Africa, and Greece.
In the past three years, he has given over $20 million to causes in education, healthcare and rehabilitation programs for former Niger Delta militants.
He owns Emmanuel TV, a Christian television network, and was close friends with late Ghanaian President Atta Mills.

Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo

Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC)
Estimated net worth: $25 million – $50 million
In 1992, Foursquare Gospel Church, a Nigerian church, sent Ashimolowo to open a satellite branch in London. But Pastor Matthew had other ideas and decided to set up his own church instead.
Today, his Kingsway International Christian Center is reportedly the largest Pentecostal church in the United Kingdom.
In 2009, the church posted profits of close to $10 million and assets worth $40 million.
Ashimolowo earns an annual salary of $200,000, but his real wealth comes from varied business interests including his media company, Matthew Ashimolowo media, which churns out Christian literature and documentaries.
Ashimolowo’s representatives did not respond to a request confirming his net worth and ownership of all these assets.

Chris Okotie

Church: Household of God Church
Net worth: $15 million -$25 million
Pastor Okotie made his first success as a popular pop musician in the 80s. He found the light, embraced the bible and set up the Household of God Church, one of Nigeria’s most flamboyant congregations.
His 5,000 member church consists predominantly of Nollywood celebrities, musicians, and society people.
He contested and lost Nigerian presidential elections for the third time this year under the Fresh Party, a political party he founded and funds.
An automobile lover, he owns a Mercedes S600, Hummer and Porsche among several others.

2 UNILORIN STUDENT CONSTRUCT AIRPLANE PROTOTYPE

The students created the prototype as their final year project.
Two 500-level students of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ilorin, Ali David and Patrick Effiong, have constructed an aircraft prototype.
The duo told journalists in Ilorin that they had nurtured the passion to construct the aircraft when they were in 100 level, adding that it was now their final year project.
Mr. David noted that many of his colleagues were skeptical when they first broached the subject, adding that they were not deterred by the challenges they faced.
“What we are actually working on is a machine that will lift up itself through the law of aerodynamics and having an engine, a propeller and the fuselage,” he added.
Mr. Effiong, on his part, said: “With some of our lecturers backing us, we were motivated; we decided that we can carry out the construction.
“Ali brought the idea to me that he had the dream of constructing an aircraft, but I didn’t really buy the idea then and I thought he had forgotten about it.
“So when we got to 400 level, he raised the idea again.’’
Also speaking with newsmen, the project supervisor, Tajudeen Ajiboye, said the students had demonstrated a high level of intellectualism inspite of the challenges they faced.
Mr. Ajiboye, who said the students were faced with the problems of materials and manpower at the initial stage, commended them for their tenacity to accomplish the project.

BREAKING NEWS: EX-GOV. AGAGU IS DEAD

immediate past governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Agagu is dead. He was 65. He reportedly died on Friday at about 8 pm in his Bodija, Ibadan residence 24 hours after returning from a foreign trip, family sources confirmed last night..
The former governor was said to have been hale and hearty as he showed no sign of sickness before he suddenly slumped and died.
It was gathered that Agagu had travelled to the United States of America (USA) for over three weeks. He returned to the country on Thursday.
His death came as a shock and surprise to many, particularly his political associates and members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state.
He was said to have held meetings with members of the party moments before his death.
It was also learnt that the former governor had fixed next Thursday for a general meeting of the party members where he was expected to address them on the position of the state in the crisis rocking the PDP.
Besides, he was said to have held consultations with many party members in Ondo State on the way forward as he was bombarded with calls over the development.
His death also came at a point he was to lead two other elders of the party from the southwest to deliberate and find solutions to the crisis in various states of the region.
Olusegun Kokumo Agagu, born 16 February 1948, was Governor of Ondo State  from 29 May 2003 until February 2009.
He commenced his elementary education at St. Luke’s Anglican School, (now known as St. Paul’s Anglican School) Okitipupa, in 1954. In January 1958, he moved to live with his cousin, Edward Fagbohun in Ibadan, where he continued his primary education at Ebenezer African Church School, Oke-Ado, Ibadan. In 1959 he transferred to Kano  where he studied at the Ebenezer Methodist School and Baptist Primary School Sabon-Gari, Kano. Agagu went to the University of Texas between 1973 and 1974 for his Masters degree in Geology. Returning to Nigeria, he obtained a Ph.D degree in Petroleum Geology from the University of Ibadan in 1978.
Agagu was appointed by President Olusegun Obasanjo as his first minister of Aviation in 1999. On 29 June 2006 President Olusegun Obasanjo commended him for the work he had done leading Ondo State, saying “You have taken time to plan. We have also seen that the execution of the plan is now showing results.”

PASTOR KUMUYI VIEW ON "I WENT TO HEAVEN AND HELL" PROPHET AND PROPHETESS

Pastor William Kumuyi, General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry has disowned the controversial videos of a ‘prophetess’ and others who claimed to have died, gone to heaven and came back to narrate their extra-terrestrial experience.
In the controversial videos being sold all over Nigeria, two women and a boy claimed they died, went to heaven and came back to narrate what they said God showed them.

One of such CDs is that of a Sierra Leonean woman, simply called Sister Linda Ngaujah. Linda said she died and was shown happenings in heaven and hell and that many  of the members of a large church on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway are on their way to hell and that the founder of a leading church in Lagos should repent as he allegedly acquired his powers from the devil, saying that a Bishop of another large congregation and his members are not even recognised in heaven.
She added that women who used rubber and wool to plait their hair will go to hell as it is a sin and that the only way for people to be prepared for heaven is to go back to the old Deeper Life Bible Church’s method of dressing.
The video CDs released by Linda is causing serious controversy in the church of God as some women in Deeper Life, who plait rubber hair have vowed never to do so again as they want to get to heaven.
Some female worshippers have even shaved their hair in one Christian Assembly in Ikorodu, saying that they don’t want to have anything to do with attachment as they want to get to heaven.
Another person who claimed to have gone to heaven said she saw the late wife of Kumuyi, Biodun, in heaven and narrated her encounter there.
Other CDs were released by  Margaret Amure from Church of God Mission, who also claimed to have gone to heaven and another 10-year old boy from Edo, named Samuel.
Reacting to this development on Sunday during the church service, Pastor Kumuyi warned members of his church not to have anything to do with such CDs as these are the last days where many people would come up with different things to deceive the church of God.
Kumuyi urged members of the church not to waste their money on such CDs, saying that the church should not rely on purported CDs of people who claimed to have gone to heaven to come back to produce CDs to sell to people narrating their encounter.
He referred to Linda’s CD which said people need to dress like Deeper Life to get to heaven, saying that “if you dress like Deeper Life without salvation and sanctification, will you get to heaven? These are the last days.”
The man of God emphasized that dressing like Deeper Life would not take anybody to heaven but that righteousness and holiness of heart are the keys to getting to the kingdom of God and warned members to desist from watching such CDs.
Kumuyi further said that one of the people who claimed to have gone to heaven said they saw Mummy Kumuyi in the kingdom of God, saying that he did not need such CD to know that his wife was in heaven and that the word of God has told us the criteria for getting to His kingdom.
According to him, such people were merely deceiving the people, saying that when Apostle Paul was translated to heaven and came back, he did not produce CDs about what he saw in heaven and began to sell them.
“When Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, Lazarus did not go about telling people that this was what he saw in heaven. We should rest on the word of God to tell us what we need to know about heaven and how to get there. How do you know that they have actually gone to heaven? These are the last days. Don’t waste your money on buying these CDs,” he stated.

Mali’s new president promises to bring peace, fight graft

BAMAKO (Reuters) – Mali’s new president, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, pledged to stamp out corruption and bring peace to the turbulent north as he was sworn in on Wednesday, 18 months after a coup and rebel uprising plunged the gold exporter into chaos.
The former prime minister won last month’s runoff vote by a landslide – the first election since soldiers took the capital and Tuareg separatists and Islamist insurgents seized the northern half of the country.
Keita told a packed auditorium he would unite the fractured country – once seen as a haven of stability in West Africa – and thanked France for its military intervention that drove al Qaeda-linked fighters out of the vast desert territory.
France did not tackle the separatists – saying their uprising was a domestic matter – and Mali’s government has already promised to start talks with the Tuaregs, currently clustered in their remote northeastern stronghold of Kidal.
“National reconciliation is our most pressing priority,” said Keita, wearing a yellow presidential sash across a business suit. “From tomorrow, we will take appropriate steps to bring a lasting peace to break this cycle of rebellions in the north.”
Light-skinned Tuaregs, demanding greater autonomy from the black African-dominated southern capital Bamako, have launched four rebellions since independence from France in 1960.
Previous peace deals promising development to the region have been undone by rampant corruption and a lack of trust.
MALI AT CROSSROADS
Many in the populous south are bitterly opposed to ceding more autonomy and funds to the northerners, who they blame for their country’s implosion last year.
Keita, known by his initials IBK, has promised to convene a national convention to discuss devolution of authority to the regions, both in the north and south.
Keita also faces a daunting task in reviving Mali’s economy, which shrank by 1.2 percent last year. Mali is sub-Saharan Africa’s third largest gold exporter.
His hand will be strengthened by 3.25 billion euros (2.73 billion pounds) in reconstruction aid pledged at a conference in Brussels in May.
Advocacy groups have urged Keita to tackle deep-rooted corruption. Junior military officers said widespread anger over graft was one of the triggers of their March 2012 coup.
“Mali stands at a crossroads,” said Corinne Dufka of Human Rights Watch. “President Keita’s actions – or inactions – could usher in greater respect for human rights or a return to the problems that caused Mali’s near-collapse last year.”
Keita, who earned a reputation for toughness in crushing student protests as prime minister during the 1990s, pledged to restore the rule of law.
“I will bring an end to impunity,” he said. “I will fight corruption tirelessly. No-one will be able to illicitly enrich themselves at the expense of the Malian people.”
Analysts have called on Keita to use the mandate from his overwhelming victory in the August 11 election to appoint a cabinet of capable technocrats, rather than political allies.

LATEST ON ASUU STRIKE/HOLIDAY

Mr. Labaran Maku, the Minister of Information, announced the government’s attitude to the strike while speaking to the reporters on September 4, 2013, Wednesday, after the weekly meeting of the Executive Council of the Federation, FEC, in Abuja.
“This country belongs to all of us, if we all insist that every sector problem must be completely solved, we will down tools we will not work, then the country will stop working,” he said.
The Minister of Information also pointed out that if all the sectors of government decide to down their tools until all their problems are solved, the country would shut down.
Mr. Labaran Maku insisted that the Government implements a 2009 agreement it had with the Union.
“We are partners with ASUU, we are friends. They are our patriots and we understand the critical role that the universities teachers are doing to create a new society that we are hoping to have.
“But at the same time, this is a reality question that we need to look at and we have to put the nation first,” he said.
WE ALL HOPE THE STRIKE END SOON
